      CALL FOR RADICAL REFORM

Campaigners are calling for better prison conditions to prevent female
inmates committing suicide.
The Fawcett Commission wants a radical overhaul to tackle the problem.


Home Secretary Charles Clarke is expected to outline his strategy later
today.

An independent report into the problem released last year warned jail was
not suitable for the vast majority of women.

Since then, 12 women have died of self-inflicted deaths in prison.

A review of the original report will stress that reforms are desperately
needed.

The number of women behind bars has nearly trebled in the last 10 years.

There are currently 4,392 females in prison in England and Wales.

Some 30% of these women harmed themselves in 2003, compared to 6% of the men
behind bars.

It is those women under-21 who appear the most vulnerable, with 65% of this
age group self-harming.
