AOL charges 2.95 after 5 hours, but AOL isn't an internet service provider.
It's a commercial online service that provides internet access as one of its
services. Apples and oranges.
If someone is located in an area without any ISPs, one of the online
services, with a POP in every county practically, might make sense. But for
most people, to subscribe to a commercial online service in order to get
internet access is like flying from Newark to LaGuardia in order to get
across town.
In my city, at least, it's cheaper to subscribe to a commercial online
service to get the things that are ON that service and to have a separate ISP
account for internet access. You still come out ahead. In fact, I'm doing
exactly that. You'll have to do your own cost-benefit analysis but I suspect
some folks will be in for a surprise if they clock their internet time
separately from the rest of their online time and see how quickly they could
pay for a separate unlimited connect time internet service provider.
