Hello Peter,
Thank you for your reply, which I quote in part below:

AS> I have a Spirit SMI 14400 modem which I use quite successfully with

AS> an assortment of Win3.1/Win95 software but........

PO> Please tell me how to go about this, as I have a friend who has one

 PO> do you?) :-)

The problem with the Spirit SMI is that the old Soft Modem manager does not
agree with Win95. There is a new driver available which I am using. It is
readily available or if you like I can e-mail it to you as an attachment.
The file is only 200kb or so; let me know.

  You also mentioned:

AS> I have an intermittent problem where the modem connects but I get a
AS> blank screen. This is most noticeable with Hyperterminal both in its
AS> bare bones state and the Hilgraeve update.

PO> Please tell me more about the Hilgraeve update, please.

The company which made Hyperterminal for Win95 have released an update
which adds several new features such as auto-zmodem download: still not
a world shaking package but an improvement anyway. You can download it
from their WWW site at:
               http://www.hilgraeve.com

  Hope that helps,
                        Andrew.
