| subject: | Avtek 288 and CPS rates |
PC> I've been using an Avtek FlashModem 288 v.34 with the Cooee comms
PC> package and want to know what is an acceptable CPS download rate using
PC> Z-Modem when I've connected at 28800/V34/V42BIS to a host system
PC> running Netcom 28.8's (ie Melb PCUG BBS during the morning) about 30km
PC> from where I live. The Avtek is using the Motorola chipset.
PC>
PC> After beginning a typical download, it starts out at 3000+ CPS; after
3000 throughput means The speed has shifted down to a 26400 connect
already, above about 3060 to 3300 is 28800
PC> {at}60 seconds and a few CRC errors (say 8), it drops back to {at}1500 CPS
CRC errors are not errors caused by a noisy line, but between the
modem and the computer.
Down to a 14400 connect
PC> then, depending on the file size, mellows out to {at}1300 CPS five minutes
PC> and a few more CRC errors later.
Down around 12000 connect
PC>
PC> Is this an acceptable sort of performance? If not any ideas on what I
PC> could do to improve it, besides buying a Dynalink :)
If you aim to improve your position, DON't buy a Dynalink.
It won't be any better that what is happening now.
PC> * OFFLINE 1.56 * ... Then, quite suddenly, and all at once, nothing
PC> happened.
Down to a 75BPS connect here
Line noise MUST be your problem.
And there is little YOU can do about it.
