There was no scientific research supporting the legislation, Jane.
In fact, the AMA's position that it wanted marijuana to continue to
be available had to be misrepresented to Congress in order for the
original prohibition legislation to pass. And, of course, the
legislation was not reversed after the AMA denounced this legislative
fraud.
As pointed out by the Merck Manual, the primary objection to
marijuana is POLITICAL -- NOT TOXICOLOGICAL. Moreover, the DEA's
hearings reviewing ALL of the scientific and medical research, and
the NIDA's research regarding addiction, both came to the
conclusion that marijuana had no significant toxicity or potential
for addiction.
