subject: where do you want to live?

Of course, it might just depress some of us....

            A WORD FROM THE CHEF

I enjoy the luxury of being able to live and work anywhere I want, and
I know that not everyone can do the same. Still, this cool
match-making tool should be of interest to just about everyone, if
only to exercise the daydreaming muscles. It belongs to the Money
Magazine web site which is owned by CNN. Maybe I'm being a bit naive,
but I tend to put quite a bit of faith in the accuracy of the data
presented by the world's most trusted news organization. Judge for
yourself.

If you would like to play the "where is the best place for me to live"
game, point your browser to http://money.cnn.com/best/bplive/ There
you will find links to two tools. One is a quick "Easy Search" that
chooses a place based on ten factors such as weather, tax rates,
leisure opportunities, the quality of health care and education, and
pollution. You rate the importance of each of these factors from 0
(not important) to 3 (very important). You can also specify the
region of the United States (sorry, there are no locations outside the
US) and the size of the cities you wish to consider.

If you want a more detailed analysis, click on the "Super Search"
link. This takes you through more than 40 questions in five
categories (weather, housing income and taxes, travel and
entertainment, college and education, health and safety), each of
which you get to rate on a scale of 1 to 5 in importance.

Be prepared for some surprises based on your choices, and go ahead
and play with the things for a while. I found that even a minor change
in one or two of my choices made a big difference in the results to tools
provided. Very cool. And they also have a tool for "The Best Place to
Retire" at http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/bestplaces/bpretire.jsp - also
very cool.

Next week I'll share with you the criteria I used that resulted in my
planned move to southern Florida, and more about some of the web tools
I used. Until then, have a great weekend.
