Hi!

It's called "small pox" because they wanted to differentiate from a
really deadly disease, pox.  Pox is now known as syphilis.  Syphilis is
a case where the disease has mutated (or mutated us or both) to the
point that it is no longer quickly fatal but "merely" crippling for
life.

PS, so the old curse "A POX on you!" was really, really nasty.

I knew that - but I thought it referred to small pox, which is extremely
painful, often fatal, and leaves you scared for life
