subject: DUAL SOFTWARE SETUP

This may be a dumb question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. After
all, Sysops are like ham radio operators...we love to experiment.
Besides, I believe that besides myself, Rob Swindell, Dave Perussel, and
Sean Dennis, are all Sysop Hams...and there may be more. :)

Anyway, I originally ran GT Power for dial-up (when it was owned by
Paul Meiners) for 12 years. I went to Synchronet in 2005, and ran it
until going to Virtual Advanced (VADV32).

However, for whatever reason (port sniffers, etc.) lately, the VADV32
Telnet server has been crashing quite a bit...and I haven't changed the
settings. Until I discover the crash, the BBS, and possibly the web
server (Uniserver with VADV32) are down. But, thunderstorm potential
around Arkansas lately (especially with a stalled cold front in the
region, and the remnants of Tropical Storm Bill), I'm not going to get
much computer work done for a bit.

I am CONSIDERING going back to Synchronet to see if it has the same
issues with the telnet server. It does have the ability to run both
fossil and non-fossil doors (3.14 or above), as well as DOOR32.SYS
(32-bit doors)...2 things with VADV32 can't do (fossil doors only for
VADV32...unless one does a workaround with the Doorway program).

However, while the setup for Synchronet is tedious, I've done it
before, so I just have to find the time to do it. One rule of Sysoping I
learned over 25 years ago was that "unless you do the setup work, it's
not your setup". If I got stuck, I didn't mind another Sysop just
showing me "how the syntax worked"...then, I could take it from there.
I've heard of Sysops who had another Sysop basically do all the
work...then this "lazy Sysop" took all the credit for it. I prefer to
give credit where credit is due.

Anyway, my question, though is this...

Can I still have the VADV32 setup on the computer, but except for the
web server (I'd use the VADV32 setup with Uniserver), the rest of the
BBS would be Synchronet. To me, it'd be like "the best of both worlds".
My HTML knowledge is very basic...so, I like the customization one can
do with VADV-PHP -- however, Synchronet's webserver is a bit more
complex with customization.

Every BBS software has its pluses and minuses with each Sysop, and I
know one has to weigh the pros and cons of running it. There are other
BBS packages out there, and I'm not knocking any of them...but it's only
with GT Power, Synchronet, and VADV32, that I have experience with.

  Any comments would be appreciated.
