subject: Linux can act like Windows file sharing node?

From: Randall Parker

I found in Fedora 5 Gnome desktop's:
    Places | Connect to Server...

On that "Connect to Server" form the Service type "Windows
share" appears to be for
outbound sharing of files on other machines.

But what about the other direction? Can Linux to file sharing where it makes a share
available to Windows?

Also, instead of doing Windows share could I configure something more sophisticated
so that the Linux box acts like a file server using some more sophistacted protocol
that Windows understands? Would that approach be any more secure? If so, how?
