No, the airline folks seem for the most part to be a long way from
understanding what blind people can do. Of course, I don't ask that
they know a lot about blindness or about the techniques we use to make
our way in the world. I do ask--and insist--that they presume that we
CAN make our way, that we, like other people, know our own particular
abilities and limitations and know when to ask for their extra
intervention.
My wife has observed that people's brains often cease to function for
the time they are around blind folks. Last week for example, we were at
a theater. We went downstairs to use the bathrooms. After we climbed
up the stairs again, the woman who'd been with us asked if we'd have
trouble using stairs. I said no, that we'd just climbed some after all,
and the three of us got a sort of laugh out of the business. Sometimes,
though, I feel like screaming, "Give me a frigging break!!!"
Take care!
