Oh indeed but see my point wrt what you have installed. Modern distros come
with enormous amounts on the cd'es/DVD & possibly even more in online
repos.
If you install 10K apps then yup you may well see 5 patches per week. If
not...then that number drops.
e.g. a mate of mine has redone is (linksys I think) wifi router with linux
mostly for ssh (it allows his PC to be set to WoL & thus save power etc
& he has yet to get any update notifications mailed to him.

In Mandrake in the "Configure your Computer"/"Software
Management"/"Select from where software packages are downloads
when updating the system".
Alternatively....you can type drakconf....to get to the screen or
"urpmi" where to add a new repo it' " urpmi addmedia
........medianame....."
e.g that easy urpmi page i gave you the link to ends up spitting out a set
of commands which you simply paste into a terminal & hit enter e.g.
e.g. having chosen some addresses here is all the string you need to set up
a number of repos for mdk:
"urpmi.addmedia plf-free
http://plf.lastdot.org/mandriva/free/2006.0/i586 with hdlist.cz
urpmi.addmedia plf-nonfree
http://ftp.gts.lug.ro/plf/mandriva/non-free/2006.0/i586 with hdlist.cz
urpmi.addmedia --update updates
ftp://mirror.cricyt.edu.ar/MandrivaLinux/official/updates/2006.0/main_updates/
with media_info/hdlist.cz
urpmi.addmedia main
ftp://mirror.inspire.net.nz/mandrake/official/2006.0/i586/media/main
with media_info/hdlist.cz
urpmi.addmedia contrib
ftp://ftp.song.fi/pub/mirrors/Mandrake-linux/official/2006.0/i586/media/contrib
with media_info/hdlist.cz "
Oddly the one starting with "urpmi.addmedia --update updates "
is.....the ...waaaait for it......updates repo.....
& then you can add other sites such as
http://seerofsouls.com/
for bleeding edge up to the second stuff
or jpackage (a sh*tload of rpm'ed java apps).
http://www.jpackage.org/repos.php
