Is 5 patches per week what you consider the acceptable patch release =
frequency for 1 CD side (~700MB) of install, 1 DVD side (~4.7GB) of =
install, or something else?
Is this frequency specific to linux and the quality of its releases =
or does it apply to other operating systems (e.g. OS X, Windows)? How =
about non-OS software releases?

Oh indeed but see my point wrt what you have installed. Modern distros
come with enormous amounts on the cd'es/DVD & possibly even more in
online repos.
If you install 10K apps then yup you may well see 5 patches per week. =
If
not...then that number drops.
