It depends on the app/component if it's something which everything else
depends on & which has had a major revision e.g. apis have changed etc
then it makes little diff what OS you are on. it not it's fairly simple. I
had a problem with SANE & my scanner. Basically the old sane worked but
the new one didn't because the scanner reports as an Epson however it's
actually a rebadged plustek & you have to tell it to ignore the USB
vendor info & force it to see that it's a plustek etc.

Anyway....to cut a long story short I am using the SANE backend from
mandrake 9. If I install anew I install all of sane, uninstall sane-backend
& then install the sane-backend from the mdk9 cd.
