RL ->Please, tell me.  What is Xbase++ ?
A few years ago, a company in Germany named Alaska Gmbh wrote a
Clipper-syntax compatible compiler for OS/2. Their goal was to allow
people to port DOS Clipper applications to OS/2, which is apparently
far more popular in Germany than in the USA.
Xbase++ is their project to write a 100% Clipper-syntax compatible
compiler for Windows 95 and Windows NT. Since most of the hard work was
done for the OS/2 implementation, they were quite fast in getting a
demo version out. The product is now available in pre-release format
known as EEP1 (early experience program) with EEP2 to be released on
October 27, 1997. The first full release as Xbase++ 1.0 is expected
before the end of 1997, with v1.1 within a few months.
They're now accepting orders at about $400 US for the Early Experience
Program releases. They're also offering a 30 day money-back guarantee
on the product, with the 30 days not starting until after the release
of v1.1. Effectively you're getting at least four months to try the
product and see if it evolves to your expectations. A pretty good deal
even if it does require $400 US up front.
EEP2 is supposed to fully support their "hybrid" mode. This allows you
to use your DOS screens exactly as is even though it's really a 32 bit
executable. And you can do the changeover to GUI as desired. This means
you can put graphical GUI pushbuttons and controls right on your DOS
data entry screens!
