A good encyclopedia is a reasonable starting point.  However, 
much of the data is very out of date even in the best ones.  

In general, your research is being done to affirm or refute 
a particular position.  It's nice to find sources that 
confirm your point of view.  However, the opposing side 
is doing the same from their take on the situation.  Hence, 
it's good to find out their arguments.
