subject: IPC files

Hi Victor,

VK> Hi, does anyone know how Maximus's IPC files work? I
VK> want to change the text indicating what each user is
VK> doing (transferring a file, available for chat, external
VK> program, etc) so that if they're in a door, everyone
 VK> else knows which door.

Many years ago (when Max V2 was around) I had a similar need, to show users
via IPC more details of what was happening and that external BBS activities
were taking place. My methodology was a bit brutal, I completely replaced
all IPC actions with a fairly simple program that did the work for me.
Unfortunately this program is specific to my needs, but now that Max 3 is
available I am sure it would be very easy to build exactly what you want
using MEX. I ended up using a small 16Kb RAMDRIVE to store the status data
(and other unrelated info) for later display and it works fine.

VK> Is it safe to simply change the
VK> text starting at byte 38 in the IPC??.BBS, and put a
VK> null terminator on it, or can this move around?

From memory, thats fairly safe, however I would think it simpler to craft a
MEX way of handling this. You can then include other details such as the
time they have been online, etc...

VK> Also, is this text ever used by Maximus for anything
VK> other than simply displaying to the callers? ie if you
VK> change it, will Maximus get confused?

No, I dont think its used for any specifc purpose other than caller status display.

Cheers.......pk.
