subject: linux hdd on another pc?

Hi! Jean,

On Tue, 21 Dec 10, you wrote to me:

I'm still looking for the canoe! ;-) You haven't been spying on our
weather website have you[rhetorical]. We're in the midst of a biblical 40
days + 40 nights of rain at present. Our backyard is like a rainforest and
we have a semi-permanent creek flowing from the back fence, going under the
house and down the driveway. When I walk around the backyard my
80-something kilos still doesn't get my feet onto actual 'ground', as I end
up padding around on a carpet of grass where mere months ago it was a clay
pan with long deep cracks after our drought.

JP> If the PW is on the HD, the stream will get you !

Seen. I've read your dissertation on the matter many times.

JP> Your Police PC obviously did not have a PW protected HD.

Nope. It's not mine any more as I resigned back in July. It was my
Sergeant's PC anyhow, and he was looking over my shoulder at the time.
He'd never seen linux-anything before so I offered him a demo; first words,
"damn, it's fast!".

I cheated a bit as I already had a 'settings file' on the USB stick for our
machines (one file suits all as they are clones); I had tried to hunt down
a report written by another off-duty officer a week prior, so, the boot
skipped a question or two. (IIRC, the latest Puppy doesn't even ask
questions on the first bootup.)

It's a pity I didn't hang-in longer as the Service was about to introduce a
swipecard PC access system. The keyboards already had the hardware. We
were just waiting for the cards to enter service, after already having had
our photos taken (they're intended for any type of access, even building
security). That might have been a bit tougher to get past.[shrug]

Cheers,
Paul.
