Hello Irv:
In my humble opinion, James Lee Burke is the very best. Writes
about LA. His books are very lyrical. Almost like poetry. As I
remarked here once, you can smell the flowers, the bayous, taste
the food and hear the Cajun lilt and visualize the scenery.
And there's action with lots of surprises. Keeps you guessing
to the very end. Best of the modern mystery writers.
Does this help you?
