A decent UPS will absolutely save more than the work you are engaged in
at the time of the hit.  A UPS also will capture surges that can/will
burn out motherboards, disk drives and other parts of your PC.  I have
seen the results of a lightning strike on phone and power lines where
the UPS melted down but the pc itself survived.
As you said, different strokes for different folks, but for me a $150
investment to save $$$ of pc is a valid stroke.
