Yes.

I didn't get very far, though, since I -- for reasons still not understood
-- could never get the modem code up and running.

I'm not sure I know why you think it would be difficult to set up, though.
I used a multi-config to boot the DOSemu drivers, handing off to a portion
of the AUTOEXEC that was cordoned off. Everything but the modem ran quite
smoothly.
