It occurred to me today what died.  Beetle mouse was one of a class called
"Opti-mechanical".  The ball turns a little slotted wheel through
which a little light shines, the sensor on the other side send 1 or 0 to
the computer based on if the light is shinning or not.

When I took the cover off the mouse worked, sunlight was serving in place
of the electric light.  Put back together it didn't work, and now I
understand why.
