What did you think of the ending?
I always felt there was a concious choice (on the part of the characters)
and a sacrifice in who won... (not wanting to spell out too much since some
might want to go read it!)

yeah, it's part of why I don't think they're his best effort... but he
totally tears the heart with some of his language, so I can forgive much of
his...hmm.. over-enthusiastic use of source material. And too, I felt
greatness when I read it -- which has been amply illustrated in later books.
(with the caveat, as always, that mileage varies)
