GR> I finaly plane to join in near future the internet. As my modem is a 9.6
GR> AVTEK I'll have to upgrade. The big question is which modem? I had my eye
GR> on a Dynalink 33.6 as the price seem good. But then I saw messages
GR> reporting of some problems with this model.
BTW, my major problems with the Netcomm M34F have gone away, namely the
lockup (by using #K0 to disable MNP10), and the failure to connect to some
Interlink modem (by using %C3 instead of %C2).
The only major problem remaining is connections from Maestro + Avtek 9600
baud modems. However, I don't actually know if the problem still remains,
it's still "waiting to be tested". Since the 9600ers are so rare
(otherwise I might be able to test it!), it's not really a major problem
anyway.
GR> As I can't ask you which modem I should buy, I'll ask you which modem
GR> you would buy for your self, if you would only connect to BBS's and
GR> an ISP (no IRC) and have the occasional direct transfer of files (modem to
GR> modem). Price of curse matters and saw a Viper for 259 in a paper.
I personally would buy the *cheapest* one I could find. 33.6k. You didn't
mention fax or voice, so I wouldn't pay ANY extra money for them, since
they will NEVER be used. If that is not a true statement, then you will
have to put a value on those capabilities. All modems have problems. No
modem manufacturer will fix the problems. Don't pay a single cent for
non-existant support. BFN. Paul.
