subject: Which Linux distro to use and why?

From: Randall Parker

I have a 1.8 Ghz P4 Dell box that I want to install Linux on. So which distribution
should I try?

I'd prefer one that makes it easy to keep updated. I'd also prefer one that will
succeed in installing.

What I'll be doing with it:

1) Browsing the web.

2) Writing Java servlet code with libraries for XSLT, XSL FO, and other libs and
testing it in Tomcat as the servlet server.

3) Eventually running Postgresql or MySQL.

4) Maybe writing and testing PHP.

5) Perhaps writing device drivers.

6) Running Visual Slick Edit and Eclipse.

7) Eventually add a graphics card that can drive 2 flat panel displays.

The software development work is meant for deployment other Linux boxes on the web
and elsewhere. This is just a dev machine.
