SV> I'm beginer at diving and was wondering about wreck diving.
SV> What's involved in getting this rateing? It is something I do want to
Since your message does not state who you were certified with, I will
assume PADI. NUAI, SSI, and other agencies are probably similar.
The Wreck Diving Specialty Course will teach you safe procedures
for diving on, and penetrating wrecks. You will get a taste of how
to do measurements of wrecks. Of course, no one can learn all there
is to know about any diving specialty in only 4 training dives, but
the course will get you started. I am not certain, but the Wreck
Dive Specialty Course may have a pre-requisite of Adanced Open Water
Diver. If your instructor is using a wreck deeper than 60' for training,
you will almost certainly have to hold an Advanced OW c-card, or have
taken the Deep Diver Specialty Course first. Check at your local
dive shop for details.
P.S., if you have any plans to travel to Oahu, Hawaii, there are two
wrecks there that are very nice. One is a 185' former US Navy
minesweeper/cable laying ship, called The Mahi, and the other is a
small oil tanker, the YO-257. Both were prepared as artificial reefs
and sunk in the early 1980's, in about 90' deep water. I think either
or both would be excellent for Wreck Diver training.
... Coral reefs hate standing ovations.
