If someone wants to be a > stay-at-home parent (of either gender), this crazed backlash of setting their > gender back really needs a quick burial. I was reading an interesting article a couple days ago about the changing sense of gender roles in kids. That kids jr/sr high school age see virtually no issue with women doing formerly strictly defined male tasks, and men doing thing that used to be strictly defined as female tasks-- and so much so, that they didn't even recognize that there was any issue to be had. It wasn't that they just accepted it better, they didn't notice it. > > >Trading one form of opression (male) for another (some > >of the more radical feminism) isn't really an advancement. > > Agreed. Of course, being male, I have my own problems with the more radical > feminism. Right. You're the oppressive scumbag enemy You're a target, mate >People have forgotten that the point of the whole exercise is to > get equal, and not get even. Not even equal or even -- but reversing the tables. If women were oppressed for 1000 years, then it's time for men to be squashed under pointy heel for 1000 years. It goes nowhere. Some ppl are so focused on the fact they were (possibly) once victimized that they never move beyond being victims, or they feel the only way to go on is to become the victimiZER. But I can understand some of the bitterness, and I haven't had to go through what my mother did. Early on at Shepard's I missed out on a higher level job, and was flatly told the reason why the guy hired after me (who didn't know the job) got it over me was that he was married, and just had a new baby and had to support them. And who did this? A woman manager. In point of fact -- every unfair moment that's happened to me came from a woman, so is it sexist, or just bad management? (a bit of both.. the woman was from an older generation but otherwise a very good manager, the rest just sucked and would have even if they were men) So I've had it good -- I make the same as the guys (and in some cases more) I've had the jobs (mostly) that I wanted, and never (other than the one time) felt held back because I was a woman. But I also know that if I wanted to be CEO my chances are significantly smaller than yours even should I be more qualified. And I also believe that part of the furor and vindictive around Martha Stewart is due entirely to her being a Martha instead of a Mark We've come a long way, baby -- I don't get my paycheck shoved between my breasts as my mother did -- but there's a long way to go. For pretty much anyone who isn't a white male. (always with the caveat that you have to work for it. If you're not working for it and think it should come to you just because, then honey -- it ain't sexism/racism/anyotherism holding you back) --- Rachel's Little NET2FIDO Gate v 0.9.9.8 Alpha* Origin: Rachel's Experimental Echo Gate (1:135/907.17) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 135/907 123/500 106/2000 633/267 |
