*No* preamps? Wait a minute here! I thought you were using a Mackie
CR-1604. If this is correct, there are balanced preamps on the first
6 inputs, with corresponding gain knobs on the same plane with the
connectors. Are you using 1/4" connectors at the mixer for mic inputs?
If this is the case, you will certainly get nothing but noise from the
mixer. You *must* use the balanced XLR inputs for microphones, and turn
up the preamps to get above the noise floor of the mixer. The reverb
is patched into a channel strip for convenience; it's just nice to
have a fader instead of a rotary pot for level control, as well as EQ
to chop the low end of the reverb a bit, so that you don't get muddy
sound from the unit. If you can tell me which channels the mics are
plugged into, and what sort of connectors are used, I might have some
more ideas. I have a CR-1604 myself, and I know that mixer down to the
component level; I've done extensive modifications to my own, since the
stock unit has limited facilities, and I seriously doubt that there is
anything wrong with the mixer itself. Let me know if you have any luck,
or especially, if you don't. Take care.
... If it's professional.............it ain't Peavey!
