Responding to a message by Frances, to Charles on ...
FO>Hi. I'm a Sydney Education student who has done a lot of research in
regard
FO>to the single sex topic you are talking about. Here in
FO>Australia there are some public single sex schools. They
FO>are therefore funded primarily by the government. Yes they
FO>are legal and people do have the right to attend them if
FO>they please.
Sorry, I sometimes forget this is an international BBS. Here in the
U.S. public, single-sex schools are NOT legal.
FO>Again, single sex schools for girls often do not provide the
FO>students with the opportunity to do traditionally male
FO>dominated subjects such as physics and chemistry. Anyway
FO>let me know how ypu feel. Frances.
Well, this thread originated with an article or two that were posted
indicating some educational theorists felt that girls did not do as well
in math and science in school because they learned differently than boys
and math and science classes were taught in a style that was more suited
to males. The theory was, if girls could be segregated and taught math
and science in a manner more in tune with the way females learn, they
would do as well as boys.
My position is simple - until the advantages can be proven through
scientific studies, I am opposed to segregating the sexes. I think
there is too much people have to learn from each other to keep them
apart under false pretenses.
