It's a guess, but maybe Word is hanging with too little resource 
space due to too many files being opened? 
Word6 has a bug (doesn't return handles) that I deduce is still 
in Word7. 
I'm aiming my guess at "files" because you mentioned the Arabic 
version, and for some reason I feel that it might be opening lots 
of charcetr/symbol translation files.
