The you could get away from the "dumb" SB cards and go for a sound modual.
I have a AWE32 and a Roland Sound Canvas 55. The quality and ease of use all 
goes to the Canvas!  You do need a MPU-401 interface card like a MQX-32M that 
has 2 in's and 2 out's. 
As you can gather I'm not really impressed by the SB card I did have to 
rework the IRQ's so that all things worked. In 95 I had problems with 
Cakewalk Audio Pro geting it to also play .WAV files, thought with 3.1 worked 
OK.
