It's just the opposite of what you say. Belief in the existence of gods is
not required. The only rational state in this case is an absence of belief
in the existence of gods.

Atheist agnostics go beyond absence of belief in the existence of gods to
unabashedly deny and repudiate, on principle, religious belief in the
existence of gods:
