Ronald Reagan screwed up a lot of things, but it may be firing
 the Air Traffic Controllers was the biggest screwup of all.

 In 1981 Reagan fired almost all the Air Traffic Controllers, and
 replaced them with new people. Most of those new people were
 young. The older ones, those over 27 when hired, have already
 passed the mandatory retirement age, and are already retired or
 retiring. If the youngest was 20 years old when hired, a very
 young age for a ATC, he will be gone in 2018. Along with that
 those ATCs not fired will mostly already be retired, and will
 certainly be gone before 2018.

 IOW, every single Air Traffic Controller we have will have to be
 replaced within the next 9 years. And this during a major fiscal
 meltdown.

 Oh well, the upside is, all those new jobs opening up. ATC will
 become one of the job growth areas.
