... ain't me, but close.
I took a tumble Monday. We were power-washing the house up at the lake, and
after you apply the detergent you're s'posed to let it sit for a while - so
I went up on the roof to fix a leak over the entryway.
Or at least, I tried to get up on the roof.
The edge of the roof at one point is 7' above the deck, and we've got an
old 8' ladder. The edge of the roof - like so many houses in New England -
has two feet
of aluminum sheeting on the edge, to prevent ice dams. The pitch of the
roof is fairly steep as well. However, I've been up on that roof before
without many problems.
I propped up the ladder - the top rung was just below the edge of the roof - and
climbed up, caulking gun in one hand and broom in the other (in retrospect, that
was silly). I got my foot up on the shingles, past the ice sheeting, put my full
weight on it and brought my other foot up. For a moment, I was fine... then
my foot started slipping.
I got my foot on to the sheeting, but of course it kept sliding... got my
foot on the top rung of the ladder, which proceeded to fall sideways - so I
kicked it
to accelerate its fall and get it out of the way, turned so my back was to
the roof and basically fell.
Landed on my feet, and then fell over on my butt. A ridge in the sheeting ripped
an 8" scrape up the middle of my back - no blood, just red. And I
ended up tearing a good chunk of skin off the two middle fingers of my left
hand - due, no doubt, to them sliding down the asphalt shingles. Basically
ripped them down to red meat. I also managed to bruise my butt when I
landed.
Other than that I'm okay, and thank god I'm not a touch-typist. My back is
a little stiff, but not really sore... my fingers aren't bothering me at
all, unless I accidentally hit the tips against something. Plenty of
medicated ointment and band-aids...
No, I am not accident prone.
