The fact that it is everywhere makes it worth learning vi for basic things.
However, the fact that the UI is so cryptic (IMHO) makes it worthwhile not
to use vi for all editing tasks.
I know enough vi to do what I need until I get a more reasonable editor in
place. I see no need for flogging myself with the vi interface on a
regular basis, however.
