If there is anyone here who hasn't seen 'Wag the Dog,' they should see
it. It is easily the funniest movie I have ever seen - although maybe
some should be warned that the language is profane, earning the movie
an R rating, and it is utterly insensitive to New Age sensitivities.
For those who haven't yet seen it, probably the easiest way for me to
tell you about it is to start where the movie starts. In the movie,
the Washington Post has learned that the President has had sexual
relations with a girl scout (called a firefly girl in the movie) and,
with his election for a 2nd term coming up, his campaign is in serious
trouble. The President instructed his staff to 'Get me X' (X is
apparently campaign healer Dick Morris, played by Robert de Niro), and
the first scene is a focus group in the White House basement meeting
with X. X knows nothing of the situation, and when given the facts
regarding the presidential pedophilia, concludes that it will take a
war to divert the attention of the media.
It is decided that a war would be too expensive, but that a Hollywood
producer Y (apparently producer and FOB Harry Thomasson, played by
Dustin Hoffman) could produce a war on a sound stage at minimal
expense. I won't even try to tell you about it, except to say that it
definitely is not a war movie, but suffice it to say that in its first
week, the movie was at #17 at the box office, and it is now, after
three weeks, at #4 (you probably know that this is like defying
gravity, as movies make less money as time passes from the date of
their release, not more).
But as to the movie: Deja Bubba! How many times have we seen Bubba
create crises to deflect media attention from his petty puberty? It
usually comes as an airplane crash, or a trumped-up investigation of
an airline like Valu Jet, although he frequently 'brings peace to
Isreal.' His wars? Well, of the Bubba wars really count as more than
police action. And though his occasional dances with Saddam threaten
war, he has done this so often that even his fans are beginning to
laugh at the possibility that Bubba is 'really getting mad this time.'
But this time may just be the time the dog starts wagging Bubba. He
has been caught in his pedophilia with government intern Monica
Lewinski, who was moved to the White House in order to fool the secret
service when she 'worked late,' ('b-b-but I swear, officer, she looked
21, nyuck, nyuck, nyuck'), so this may be the time Bubba decides to
produce a full-fledged war to save his neck. One of Chelsea's
playmates? Who knows. Anyway, he is in serious trouble, so look for
him to try to wag the dog again.
Incidentally, one of the most beautiful bits of irony of this movie is
that the movie was taken from ideas published in a book published in
1993 to smear the GOP. It just turns out that the movie portrays the
way the Dems attack the GOP and get away with it.
... Why does a dog wag its tail? Because it is smarter than its tail.
