Hi Barbara,
BH> My nape is one that sounds like yours. Small frontal patch, small rear
BH> nape, grayish beak & feet. He's large, 570 gms, or so, also has the
BH> burgandy color at the edge/bend/underside of his wing.
BH> Stoodley's book has been my reference but it is confusing about
BH> Ochocephala subspecies. They all seem to be lumped together.
In one of the books they are all listed under the Yellow-Crowned Amazons.
This alone makes it confusing and would cover everything i the Amazon family
with yellow on it's head with the exception of the Mealy.
Hector has no yellow on the nape. His mate, which is obviously a different
subspecies, has yellow on the forhead and nape. So far they have produced
only
one chick out of 7 that has the "burgandy" at the bend. All the other chicks
have had the red like the female. Hector is larger than Lovely, his mate.
I have one of his offsping, Carmen, set up with a hen, Coco, that has a lot
of
the yellow markings. I haven't set them up with a nestbox so there hasn't
been
any chicks.
It is confusing. The only thing that I know for sure is that they aren't
Double Yellow Heads.
