You'd have to be terribly unfortunate to experience a power loss during the
several seconds it takes to flash-upgrade the modem.

Of course, you could spend several hundred dollars on a UPS just to make
sure you don't write off your modem if you happen to be one of those poor
sods who decices to upgrade their modem's code during an electrical storm.
