stages of spelling and this seems to be a good time to start on some
more formal spelling instruction.
Believe me with invented spelling and whole language instruction there
is still room for "formal" spelling type instruction - for instance
spelling patterns in the form of word families. ( Done even in
kindergarten) Done as a brainstorming activity on chart paper. Kids
often make little books from the words gathered, etc. (grade one
and up) Rather than doing "busy work" in the form of work sheets. ;)
The higher up the grades you go the more structured the activities can
become. By this time the children are ready for it!
