If you just reformat and reinstall, any hard drive space that had the 
offending files on it that isn't overwritten with new data could be recovered
very easily.  If they are files you don't ever want to be seen again I would
use a disk wiping utiliy first.  of course the likelyhood of someone with the
software and nohow to do it is pretty slim.
