I am just starting my evaluation with Linux - configuring it for my
target environment and learning the default insecurities so that I can
create a secure installation. So I cannot make an knowledgable
recommendation.
My personal strategy is to go the RedHat route for reasons similar to
yours. I'm starting with Fedora to get a feel for the bleeding edge and
the complete breadth of software available, and how the development
environment works. Next I'll move on to CentOS or RedHat Enterprise Linux
since they'll be testing upgrades more thoroughly.
