necessary evil for live performances.  Since my little company provides both 
sound and lighting, I set out to eliminate the noise problem.  The first 
thing that came to mind was to use reactors on the power feeds to the 
lighting.  I blew that off, when I got an idea of the size/weight of the 
things.  What I wound up doing is building my own controllers using 
opto-isolated solid state relays instead of scr's.  While I don't get any 
dimming capability, the system is dead quiet, uses the power much more 
efficiently, is easy on lamps, lightweigt and compact, easy to repair and 
only cost $15 per 1000w channel.
