GW>Jerry Jankura mentioned this to Steve Batson:
GW> JJ> 1. How about the fact that Delphi is well suited for applications

GW>Have you tried doing a graphic app with a custom 256 color palette (or

I'm using Delphi as the user interface for some machine vision stuff
I've been working on. Right now, one system uses two cameras and acts as
an inspection system for off-line quality control. The other system uses
two cameras and three motors and implements a feedback control system.
I've got some routines that simply write the contents of a frame grabber
to the VGA screen using a 256 color grey scale palette. I'd really like
to speed up that process by using the WinG API and have purchased Mike
Scott's WinG SpriteKit from ZAC catalogs. About the only thing I'm
having problems with is getting a custom palette to "hold". I can copy
the custom palette into the WinG surface. When I check the contents of
the palette immediately after the copy, it looks correct. But a little
while later, it's back to all Zeros except for the lowermost and
uppermost ten palette entries. I suspect that I'm doing something
incredibly obviously dumb that allows th is to happen.
If you're into sharing nightmares, I'm all ears. My heart is not all
that brave (nor is it stout), but I'm known for being dumb enough to
wade into things before I really know how difficult things should be and
somehow come out smelling like a bouquet of roses. Although I've been
teaching C++ for several years now, I've become attracted to Delphi
simply because of the ease of working with the human interface. I
haven't used Borland's Turbo Pascal much at all, but I've played with
Pascal several years ago - when Mike Lehman advertised his $99 Pascal/MT
in an issue of Byte. If you remember back a few years, Frank Borland
used Pascal/MT as his model when developing TurboPascal. Seriously,
though, any light you could shed on the graphics would be appreciated.
