I am one of the few people on earth who actually "gets" the
registry. My only issue with it is that it's a bitch to backup.

Just today I finished moving my main desktop at work to a new computer. I
backed up to tape, installed OS on new box, did a full restore to new box,
upgraded with OS CD to make it redetect the hardware properly and poof all
the apps were broken. So I saved the software sections from HKLM and HKCU
parts of the registry, edited a few OS related parts out, and loaded them
on the new box and presto all my apps, copyprotection and all came back
fully in tact without requiring any fussing with reinstalling. Even office
2000 worked. The only thing that broke was shavlik hfnetchkpro and that
turned out to be an MDAC8 issue.
