The underlying reason some conservatives find themselves
in opposition to others is that there are at least three different
kinds of conservatives: religious conservatives, fiscal conservatives,
and social conservatives.  And then there are moderate conservatives,
and add to that the fact that modern liberals and conservatives have
flip-flopped since 1960, leaving modern conservatives more resembling
classic liberals as the party of reason, while modern liberals more
resemble the classic conservatives as the party of emotion.
Some of us conservatives are therefore shocked and dismayed to find
other conservatives who advocate government intrusion into private
matters.  It's a little like Christianity.  Probably as many US
liberals are Christians as US conservatives, but to listen to some
liberals, all Christians are conservatives and all conservatives are
Christians.
(Aside:  How many people who demand an absolute separation of church
and state recognize the fact that Clinton and Gore routinely raised
campaign funds at black churches and Buddhist temples?)
