all tips I can muster from anyone.  Keep suggesting, always!
It turns out I just added the path prior to the *.MSG extension, and
the problem was solved!  The key part of the trouble, prior, being
CHDIR does not change the path, and instead of adding in a CHPATH
command, then a CHDIR, just smash 'em together with like this:
(netmail$ already is: c:\netmail\)
a$=dir$(netmail$+"*.MSG")
Take care!
