Why someone would want one seems to be beyond some folks' ability to grasp.
Where I live, it would be perfectly useful, since the terrain is flat as a
pancake (though windy a lot). There seems to be a pervasive idea among
cyclists that if it ain't got all the latest bells and whistles, then it's no
good at all. Not so. What's useless to you may be the perfect thing for the
way someone else uses his bicycle. I have several bikes. My road bike is
pretty current as to the gearing/equipment on it, as is my touring/utility
bike. I like havibg all those gears, in case I ever take my bike out to a
hillier area, but around here, I hardly ever get to use most of them. I've
been thinking about using a three-speed hub on the recumbent I'm working on,
to simplify the chain management (a LOT!). It would serve me just fine.
Just because you think something's worthless doesn't mean it won't serve
someone else's purposes perfectly.
As to the reliability factor...I've seen those 3-speeds work for twenty
years, without a hitch. A little proper and use is all it takes.
