I'll agree with this - I haven't gotten far enough into the development
to see this yet, but for all the labor they put into creating the many
distributions, they could have standardized things and ended up with just a
few good distributions. I can see Ubuntu VS RedHat/SUSE for simplicity
VS comprehensiveness, or OpenBSD Unix VS Linux for the security tradeoff,
but 20-some distributions? And looking back now, there's probably no
justification for using 'strace' instead of 'kltrace', putting things in
different folders, etc.
Collaborate and put out some really polished stuff. But then, this
reflects the ancestry of Linux: Everyone wants their own distribution
because it's fun. Nobody wants to work on the mindnumbingly boring
install stuff. Somewhat like the old OS/2 printer drivers: no one wants
to work on the boring stuff and get it to just work.
