Hi Robert Obrien!

and wrote to Peter Campbell Subject: Geos running under msdos7
RO> Hi Peter, How hard is it set set up a dual boot system for OS/2?
Extremely easy. However, you do need to back up everything first unless
you have Partition Magic to create the logical drive without losing data.
I would backup in any case!

One advantage is that you can use FaxWorks for OS/2 to provide fax in
and out. Marcus Groeber (I think) has a task switcher which can be used
DR DOS like to task switch DOS programs launched from Ensemble, but I
could not get it to work. It will certainly run OS/2 programs in the
background whilst you are working in Ensemble. I played Sim City that
way.
Main disadvantage is that GEOS will stuff up your computer's clock by
not passing the time back to OS/2 after you exit Ensemble. Marcus has
a patch TIMEGUAR.ZIP to overcome this, but I have not tried it yet.
Toolbook applications under Windows don't seem to run well under WinOS/2,
but do a bit better under Windows with OS/2 support. Dual booting into
DOS/Windows 3.11 is the best solution, which is why I recommend the
RED pack in preference to the full version. The BLUE pack really isn't
worth the extra money if Windows compatibility is what you are after.
Of course, I got my copy through a "Your Computer"/IBM giveaway so cost
doesn't come into it in my case.
You will need to reconfigure the default printer setup to allow sharing.
The instructions have been posted from time to time, but if you need
them let me know and I will dig them up.
Currently I am having a look at OS/2 Warp 4 (Merlin). It is bigger and
prettier, but, for me, not a real advantage. Some of the changes they
have made seem to be to make it more Win95-like. Arguably not a change
for the better! It's main advantage is the incorporation of VoiceType (R)
Dictation, but that requires more computer and RAM than I have. Lotus
Notes Mail is also included but I have not tried that. Mainly because I
only have a 420MB hard drive, most of which is used for other purposes.

Peter Campbell
