Hi Nancy,
I was testing `Kermit' on outpostbbs.us yesterday and i thought now
may be a good time to let you know what i found so far. As i wrote, i'm
a DOS guy before anything else; though, sometimes, the test bench needs
to rely on `Windows' and that's the case here. The numbers below reveal
how much room for evolution there was when the first ~FOSSIL~ version of
`MS-Kermit' was published in 1995. I had a good idea what the plain DOS
SoftWare can accomplish in its present state, i can finally imagine what
DOS would be capable of when all its resources are tightened up and well
focused. The test bench used a ~DSL~ feed and i'm not certain the 115K2
bps limit of `COM/IP's interface is affecting my results but here it is:
________________________________________________________________________
Test Bench for | `MS-Kermit'+`COM/IP' Wayne Warthen's `Zap-O-Com'
Windows Kermit | `Kermit Win-16/32'
---------------|--------------------------------------------------------
User DownLoads | 12K1 cps 5K5 cps 5K3 cps
User UpLoads | 4K9 cps 5K8 cps 3K3 cps
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When i look at those preliminary numbers the first thing which gets
my attention is the TwoFold increase in performance when the DownLoad is
done with `MS-Kermit'! The UpLoad might be improved as well, i believe,
but right now the remote protocol driver is setting the `Kermit' packet-
size to 1024 bytes only. In any case, what i can conclude right away is
that `ZMoDem' is left far behind and will probably never reach that sort
of speed under pure DOS. Something else which comes to me is that maybe
it's not "wrong" at all to base a `Kermit' setup on ~FOSSIL~ technology;
i say the additional layer must be causing a buffering effect, actually.
When you contact your guru tell him about Sean Dennis's BBS and its
`Kermit' performance, if you must suffer from bottlenecks it's certainly
not going to come from there! B-) When you get `RLFossil' working it's
probable you'll want to ask Sylvain Lauzon if he has access to `RLFossil
v1.23' in its source-code form; the later tops at 38K4 bps but at 115K2
bps the bottleneck wouldn't be on your side neither until you have ~DSL~
instead of DialUp! I believe this perspective would have made any plain
DOS BBSer dream to no end if we had been told the whole story years ago;
perhaps it's not too late for dreams, i keep hoping a capable programmer
may still be attracted by chanlenges like this. Will you dream with me?
My name is synonymous of shoot-on-sight and everything gets blurred
on `FidoNet' when i'm around, after a while... Perhaps if the arguments
come from a lady, some SysOps or authors just might begin to listen!?...
Help me help you: i can deal with magic spells, you tell the news!
Salutations, ;-)
