You can use your own init string with Win95.

Open up the Control Panel, then open Modems, select your modem and click
Properties, click the Connection tab, the click on the Advanced button on
the bottom right.

In this dialog box, anything you type in the Extra Settings box is sent to
the modem *after* all the commands Win95 sends.

You can therefore enter any init string you like.

ATZ is probably the simplest, but Win95 might be writing it's own settings
to NVRAM, so AT&F would be
the safest.
